TRANSIENT STRESSES IN BEAMS OF VARIABLE CHARACTERISTICS
( University of Toronto )
R. F. N. Jones (1), considering the case of a beam of constant characteristics, has shown that for a disturbance which is produced by a concentrated impulse, the bending moment is discontinuous even across the fronts of the shear waves. In the present paper this phenomenon is studied for a beam of variable characteristics and the law of variation of the discontinuity is determined. The laws of variation for discontinuities of the shear force or bending moment across fronts of shear waves and bending waves, respectively, which were first obtained by Leonard and Budiansky (2) are obtained here incidentally, by a different method. The results are compared and interpreted.
