STEADY-STATE THERMAL STRESSES IN AN ELASTIC SPHERE

J. T. HOLDEN {dagger}

( Department of Mathematics, University of Manchester {dagger} )

This paper discusses the thermal stress system in an elastic sphere heated by radiation from a distant source. The solution is expressed as a series of zonal harmonics; and numerical evaluation of the principal stresses has been carried out. The analysis shows that the stress distribution on the half of the surface exposed to radiation and that on the shaded half are remarkably alike.
