NON-LINEAR DEFORMATION OF A FLEXIBLE RING

A non-linear solution of a flexible ring subject to two diametrically opposite forces is obtained under the assumption that the ring is inextensible. For large forces the deformations of the ring in the case where the forces are a pulling pair are different from that in the case where the forces are a pushing pair. As the forces become smaller, the solution to both cases tends to the classical linear solution.
