LARGE DEFLECTIONS OF A SQUARE FRAME

C. N. KERR {dagger}

( Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, University of Glasgow )

The exact (nonlinear) solution for the deflections and bending moments in a square frame, loaded at the mid-points of a pair of opposite sides, is derived for the elastic range. Experimental observations on a 17 in. square steel frame are compared both with these theoretical values and with those from an approximate, linear solution. The limitations of the linear theory are made clear.
