INTERACTION OF REINFORCEMENTS IN THE BUCKLING OF PLATE-WEB GIRDERS

( Department of Mechanics, Illinois Institute of Technology )
The elastic stability of a rectangular panel of a plate-web girder is examined. The panel is simply supported along all four edges and subject to bending stresses along two opposite edges. A transverse stiffener and a longitudinal stiffener reinforce the web. A method is provided for determining the rigidity which a transverse stiffener must possess in order to give maximum support to the web, for any prescribed value of the rigidity of the longitudinal stiffener. It is shown that, as the rigidity of the longitudinal stiffener increases, the optimum rigidity of the transverse stiffener first increases, attains a maximum and then decreases to zero. This result indicates support for two previous observations which were apparently conflicting.
