ON THE STEADY STATE THERMOELASTIC PROBLEM FOR A THIN PLATE

N. LAWS {dagger}

( Department of Mathematics, Rutherford College of Technology, Newcastle upon Tyne )

An approximate method is given for solving the steady state thermoelastic problem for a thin plate using an asymptotic expansion procedure, attention being confined mainly to the leading terms in the expansions. It is shown that the theory of plane stress provides a first approximation to the exact solution except near the edge of the plate. In the specific case of a circular plate heated along the edge, the approximate solution is compared with the exact solution.
