A PROBLEM OF ELASTIC LATERAL STABILITY

L. C. SCHMIDT

( Civil Engineering Department, University of Melbourne )

The elastio critical load of a centrally-loaded simply supported beam, which buckles laterally out of its plane, is derived using Airy integral functions. The extreme tensile fibres of the beam are restrained from moving laterally, and the end supports provide infinite torsional stiffness.

The coefficient in the derived expression for the critical load is found as a function of certain geometrical properties of the beam; the variation of this coefficient with the member properties is shown graphically.
