The torsional deformation of a long cylinder when a part of its flat surface is forced to rotate is considered on the assumption that the curved surface is free from stress and the base is rigidly fixed. The boundary-value problem is reduced to the solution of a Fredholm integral equation which is solved numerically. Approximate solutions are also considered.
