FINITE SIMPLE WAVES IN A COMPRESSIBLE TRANSVERSELY ISOTROPIC ELASTIC SOLID

I. C. HOWARD

( Department of Mathematics, University of Manchester )

This paper determines the simple wave solutions for plane waves propagating in a transversely isotropic elastic solid, the direction of propagation being normal to the direction of transverse isotropy. The isentropic approximation is adopted and the justification from shock analysis is given. It is found that three types of simple wave propagate, one of longitudinal type and two quasi-transverse waves which may be plane polarized. The results are compared with those for isotropic materials.
