TORSIONAL OSCILLATIONS OF AN ELASTIC HALF-SPACE
( Department of Mathematics, University of Dundee )
A study is made of the torsional oscillations set up in an isotropic, homogeneous elastic half-space by a rigid circular disc which is attached to the plane surface of the half-space and is forced to perform simple harmonic oscillations about its axis. Particular attention is given to the case when a parameter of the problem, namely the frequency factor, is large. Approximate results are obtained and are compared with earlier results.
Two integral equations of the second kind are shown to govern the problem. They are obtained by a method devised by Jones to solve problems of high-frequency diffraction by a circular disc. The derivation of the special iterative procedure developed by Jones for the two integral equations governing the problem has been shortened.
