ON THE CREATION OF SURFACE WAVES BY VISCOUS FORCES
S. H. SMITH
(

)
When a vertical plane, that is immersed in a slightly viscous liquid, oscillates harmonically in its own plane it is known that within the liquid any motion thus produced is quickly damped. However, it is found here that if the liquid has a free surface then progressive waves are created on the surface that are only slowly damped as they move away from the plane.
