THE SCATTERING OF ELASTIC WAVES BY GRANULAR MEDIA
( Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, University of Cambridge )
In this paper it is shown that expressions derived for the first-order displacements of scattered waves from a region where the elastic parameters vary smoothly with position can be applied to scattering by granular media.
Chernov's (9) method of random variations is used and it is shown that different forms of the correlation functions are needed, depending on whether the scattering region is smoothly varying or granular. However, the expressions for the mean square amplitudes of the scattered waves are the same at long wavelengths.
Expressions have been derived for the mean square amplitudes of the scattered waves from a granular region with general anisotropic properties and also for the mean attenuation in the incident wave.
