A LINEARIZED PISTON PROBLEM IN RADIATION MAGNETOGASDYNAMICS
( Department of Mathematics, University of Strathclyde Glasgow )
A study is made of the effects of thermal radiation on the propagation of small disturbances caused by a plane radiating piston whose temperature is raised slightly and which moves slowly from rest into an infinitely electrically conducting radiating gas in the presence of an applied transverse magnetic field. It is found that for small times the main disturbance travels at the magnetoacoustic speed. For some intermediate time the main disturbance travels at the magnetoisothermal speed, and ultimately it travels at the magnetoacoustic speed. The damping and diffusion of these waves is also discussed.
