SOLUBLE PROFILES FOR INHOMOGENEOUS GYRATIONAL MEDIA

B. S. WESTCOTT

( Department of Mathematics, University of Southampton )

The differential equations governing the propagation of plane electromagnetic waves at normal incidence in an isotropic, lossless, plane-stratified, inhomogeneous gyrational medium are examined. Continuously varying profiles for the relevant constitutive parameters, possessing exact solutions of these equations in terms of standard transcendental functions, are derived by systematic analysis. Examples based upon Bessel's, Whittaker's and the hypergeometric equation are presented.
