ON BOUNDARY-LAYER SUCTION THROUGH NARROW SLOTS

( Engineering Department, Cambridge University )
An analytical treatment is given of the laminar boundary layer on a flat plate with a narrow suction slot. When this flow is expanded in a certain perturbation series about the Blasius solution, it becomes possible to determine the first-order solution in integral form. This solution tends uniformly to the Blasius solution as the suction velocity and/or slot width tend to zero. An approximation is obtained for the wall shear stress distribution in terms of the Incomplete Gamma function. Comparisons are made between the results of the present analysis, Rheinboldt's solution and numerical solutions. The first-order solution was found to be quite accurate when the suction parameter is small.
