OPTIMUM VARIABLE THICKNESS REINFORCEMENT AROUND A CIRCULAR HOLE IN A FLAT SHEET UNDER RADIAL TENSION

E. H. MANSFIELD

( Royal Aircraft Establishment Farnborough, Hampshire )

This paper determines the sheet thickness variation near a circular hole to yield a constant equivalent stress, based on the Mises-Hencky yield criterion, in a sheet subjected to uniform radial stress at infinity. Consideration is also given to a variable thickness sheet plus a constant thickness annulus.
