A COMPARISON OF SOLUTIONS IN FIRST APPROXIMATION SHELL THEORY{dagger}

A. J. MORRIS

( Structures Department, Royal Aircraft Establishment Farnborough, Hants )

A distinction is drawn between those shell theories with constitutive equations which satisfy certain relevant physical principles rigorously, and those which are derived within the more relaxed context achieved by extending Koiter's arguments as to a consistent first approximation theory.

An examination is made of a theory proposed by Morley which fails to satisfy at least one of the physical principles but is consistent to within Koiter's first approximation theory. It is shown that these equations are satisfactory by exploiting both Simmonds's L2 error estimate and by direct comparison.
