TORSIONAL ELASTIC WAVES IN SEMI-INFINITE HOLLOW CIRCULAR BARS

J. E. LAWSON

( 6585 Test Group, Holloman A F B, New Mexico )

A solution for torsional ahear strains in semi-infinite hollow circular bars subject to certain initial conditions is obtained. Two cases of initial conditions on the end of the bar are considered and the solution obtained at two locations on the bar surface. The solution is programmed for the IBM 7094 computer and the results are obtained graphically as the ratio of higher-mode to fundamental-mode strains. The higher-mode strains are seen to have the character of damped oscillations. The sums of the first several higher-mode strains are also obtained and it is seen that near the wave front these strains are quite large. A coefficient which appears in the solution is considered separately and its influence on the solution is shown.
