ON THE CRUMPLING OF THIN TUBULAR STRUTS

A. G. PUGSLEY

( 4, Harley Court, Clifton Down, Bristol )

The large scale crumpling of thin metal tubes (R/t > 50), first discussed by Pugsley and Macaulay, is considered in terms of a revised geometry of the folding process involved. The average crumpling loads deduced agree better with experimental results and provide an explanation for the well-known transition, as tubes get thicker (R/t <50), from the diamond pattern to the crinkling (concertina) mode of deformation discussed by Alexander (1).
