THE SCATTERING OF LONG ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVES

D. S. JONES

( Department of Mathematics, University of Dundee )

When electromagnetic radiation of low frequency falls on a dielectric body a first approximation to the scattered field can be found by Rayleigh's procedure. It depends upon the solution of a combined interior-exterior potential problem. An explicit formula for the second approximation is obtained in terms of the same potential solution. Various properties of the potential solution are derived including a posteriori bounds and a technique for calculating the solution which is both convergent and stable.
