CONDUCTIVE FLOW IN A ROTATING BOX
( Department of Mathematics, The City University St. John Street, London, EC1V 4PB )
The conductive regime of flow in a rotating box subject to general thermal conditions at the walls and in the limit of small Ekman number, E, is considered. In the interior flow order one velocities are generated normal to the vertical walls of the box which are adjusted within E1/3 Stewartson layers. This results in a strong O(E1/3) circulation around the vertical walls of the box and also a significant O(E1/12) correction to the interior flow, generated by a combination of the E1/3layers and outer E1/4layers on each of the vertical walls.
