ON THE CONCENTRATED LOADING OF AN EXTERNAL ELLIPTICAL CRACK{dagger}

M. P. STALLYBRASS

( Department of Mathematics, Georgia Institute of Technology Atlanta, Georgia 30332, U.S.A. )

An exact series solution is obtained for the normal stress in the central elliptical region of the title problem, when the crack is situated in an unbounded isotropic elastic solid and the faces of the crack are symmetrically loaded.

The stated problem is also related to finding the charge density induced on an elliptical disk maintained at zero potential, by a unit point charge placed outside and in the plane of the disk.
