THE NONLINEAR BEHAVIOUR OF A SUSPENDED CABLE

SIR ALFRED PUGSLEY

( 4 Harley Court, Clifton Down, Bristol )

This paper considers a uniformly loaded cable suspended between two points at the same level with a dip that is small compared with its span. Using an approximation due to Pippard and Chitty, it examines the effects of an additional concentrated load and produces a direct equation for the horizontal component of the total tension in the cable and thence expressions for its deflected form. The analysis is given in detail for an inextensible cable, but the method can also be applied to an elastic one. The nonlinear variation of the cable deflections with the magnitude of the concentrated load compared with the initial total uniform load is ifiustrated.
