CERTAIN A PRIORI INEQUALITIES AND A PECULIAR ELASTIC MATERIAL{dagger}

J. ERNEST DUNN

( Department of Engineering Science and Mechanics, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University Blacksburg, VA 24061, U.S.A. )

By means of a specific example material, which is both isotropic and hyperelastic, several well-known a priori constitutive inequalities in finite elasticity are shown to be insufficient to secure a physically realistic material response, i.e. each of these inequalities is compatible with unrealistic material behaviour.
