NEAR-SURFACE FLOW IN GLACIERS OBEYING GLEN'S LAW

R. E. JOHNSON and R. M. MCMEEKING

( Department of Theoretical & Applied Mechanics, University of Illinois Urbana, Illinois 61801, U.S.A. )

AT SECOND order, we have found an error in our surface boundary-layer analysis. Equation (63b) for C1 which represents a higher-order shear induced in the core region by the boundary layer, should be replaced by Formula.

The error stems from the omission of a Formula in equation (40) and from an error in the expression for the integral in (62a). The correct expressions are Formula Formula

In the analysis following (40) the omission of the Formula can be traced to a similar omission in the integral term in equations (53) and (61) which ultimately leads to C1. Consequently, the higher-order stress field in the boundary layer consists of a term of order in addition to a term of order Formula. This error has no other effect on the analysis.
