POLYCONVEXITY AND STABILITY OF EQUILIBRIA IN NONLINEAR ELASTICITY

ZHANG KEWEI

( Department of Mathematics, Peking University Beijing, 100871 China Department of Mathematics, Heriot-Watt University Riccarton, Edinburgh EH14 4AS )

This note establishes a stability result for C1 weak solutions to the equilibrium equations of nonlinear elasticity under the constitutive assumption of strict polyconvexity. That is, for a large class of polyconvex stored-energy functions all C1 weak equilibria are strong local minimizers with respect to variations of sufficiently small support.
