AN ASYMPTOTIC FORMULA FOR THE MAXIMUM WORK DONE BY A THERMOELASTIC BODY
( Hertford College Oxford OX1 3BW )
Let a thermoelastic body be placed in an environment whose temperature varies periodically, and let its surface be subject to a periodic pressure. It is known that, no matter how the pressure is adjusted, internal heat conduction imposes a finite upper bound on the mechanical work that the body can perform in a period, but hitherto the least upper bound, or maximum work, has not been evaluated. The purpose of the present paper is to derive asymptotically valid formulae for the maximum work and for the optimum pressure which extracts the maximum work.
