In this paper we consider the problem of an arc crack in an infinite isotropic elastic solid under uniaxial loading at infinity. The major analysis is undertaken with the help of complex-variable methods. A point of particular concern is that existing analyses do not properly account for partial crack closure due to load orientation. A proper solution is given for partially closed cracks. This solution is compared with the standard open-crack solution of Muskhelishvili (1). For most purposes the classical solution is adequate-but there are significant differences.
