GRAVITY FLOW OF A GRANULAR MATERIAL IN COMPRESSION BETWEEN VERTICAL WALLS AND THROUGH A TAPERING VERTICAL CHANNEL

A. J. M. SPENCER and N. J. BRADLEY

( Department of Theoretical Mechanics, University of Nottingham Nottingham NG7 2RD )

We give two applications of the double-shearing theory of flow of granular materials under gravitational forces in plane strain. In the first the material is constrained between vertical rigid rough walls which compress the material by moving towards each other.Exact solutions for the stress and velocity fields are obtained. In the second problem the material flows under gravity through a tapering rough vertical channel with fixed walls. For this problem we derive an approximate solution that is accurate to the first order in a small parameter that is related to the wall slope relative to the vertical, and is based on the solution for compression between vertical walls as a first approximation.
