SPECIFIC DIRECTIONS IN VISCOELASTIC CRYSTALS

MAURIZIO ROMEO

( D.I.B.E. Università, via Opera Pia 11a-16145 Genova, Italy )

The concepts of specific directions and specific axes in elastic crystals are extended to viscoelastic crystals accounting for the inhomogeneous character of wave propagation. Material symmetry is investigated by exploiting the properties of the six-dimensional viscoelastic tensor. Specific directions and axes are found to be normal to planes of material symmetry and the bivectors of the corresponding purely transverse or longitudinal waves are obtained as functions of a real parameter. The present analysis enables us to give a generalization and an alternative proof of a theorem due to Cowin in the case of homogeneous waves in elastic crystals.
