ESCALATOR METHODS FOR LATENT ROOTS
( The National Physical Laboratory, Teddington Middlesex )
The forward escalator method is a technique for the computation of the latent roots and vectors of a matrix in terms of those of a submatrix of any lower order. The backward escalator enables the latent roots and vectors of a submatrix to be calculated in terms of those of the complete matrix. The properties of partitioned matrices are used to establish the basic theorems and equations of these methods, for both symmetric and unsymmetric matrices.
