Indentation of a double shearing dilatant granular material by a smooth rigid wedge

A Tordesillas and J Shi

( Department of Mathematics and Statistics, The University of Melbourne, Parkville, Victoria 3052, Australia )

Presented herein is a complete solution to the normal plane strain indentation of a double shearing dilatant granular material by a smooth rigid wedge. The stress and velocity fields, resistance to penetration, and contact stress are compared with those of materials obeying (i) the incompressible double shearing theory, and (ii) the Mohr-Coulomb associated flow rule.
