We derive the first approximation to the steady-state basic flow between a rotating, circular inner cylinder and an outer fixed non-circular cylinder, when the dimensionless gap-width is small. The stability of this flow to Taylor vortex-like small disturbances is then studied by a WKB method for several types of outer cylinder.
