On the Stability of Flow between a Rotating Circular Cylinder and an Outer Non-Circular Cylinder

P. M. Eagles1

( 1 Department of Mathematics, The City University, Northampton Square, London EC1 0HB )

We derive the first approximation to the steady-state basic flow between a rotating, circular inner cylinder and an outer fixed non-circular cylinder, when the dimensionless gap-width is small. The stability of this flow to Taylor vortex-like small disturbances is then studied by a WKB method for several types of outer cylinder.
