AN APPROXIMATE METHOD FOR THE CALCULATION OF PROPAGATION CONSTANTS FOR INHOMOGENEOUSLY FILLED WAVE-GUIDES

A variational method is developed for the calculation of the propagation constant in inhomogeneously filled wave-guides which is applicable to waves whose field components are given in terms of one scalar potential. The conditions for the existence of pure TE or pure TM waves in such a wave-guide are also considered.
