ON THE THEORY OF CYLINDRICAL SHELLS{dagger}

EDWARD L. REISS

( Institute of Mathematical Sciences, New York University )

A boundary layer expansion procedure is presented for constructing approximate two dimensional shell theories from the three dimensional theory of linear elasticity for cylindrical bodies for which the ratio of the shell thickness 2h to the radius R is small. The basis of the approximation is the thin shell theory of Donnell. It appears, naturally, as a result of our expansion and scaling procedures. Higher order approximations provide three dimensional corrections to the Donnell theory. These are combined to form ‘thick shell’ theories of increasing degrees of accuracy.
